Useful Running Pace Calculators: Part 2 | run; Travel

A selection of running calculators for calculating the pace of running at marathons, half marathons and other distances.

Useful Calculators for Runners: Part 2

In the previous compilation for numbers addicts, I already shared links to resources that I use to calculate the pace of running in training and competitions. During this time, my collection has been replenished with several more interesting running calculators. I'll tell you about those that seemed the most useful.

Taz Running

Opportunities

The beauty of this calculator is that it allows you to calculate the running pace for a marathon, half marathon and other competitions, taking into account the terrain of the track and your relationship with the slides. In this case, the calculation is made for a specific race based on the track profile, which is available in the site database. It is also possible to manually make corrections for each kilometer.

As a result, we get a convenient printout with a full layout according to the distance, which can be fixed on the arm in the form of a bracelet.

How to use

First of all, we choose the race in which we plan to participate. This can be done using the detailed search form. Found starts, information on which is in the site database, are displayed in the form of a list or on a map.

For example, I chose my recent marathon in Barcelona.

Then go to the Settings section:

  • indicate the target time for the distance, the main and, if desired, alternative as a fallback.
  • we evaluate our relationship with the slides on a scale from 0 to 20, where 0 – the slides do not care, they do not affect the pace in any way, 20 – I can hardly crawl up the hill.
  • if necessary, we manually adjust the pace for each kilometer – for example, when we know in advance that there will be a crowd at the start and we will have to run slower at first, we plan to slow down at food points, etc.
  • select the settings for displaying the appearance of the final table.

As a result, we get a layout for each kilometer of the distance, taking into account the relief and individual corrections, as well as a map and the altitude profile of the route.

Another handy feature that will come in handy for the support team: if you click on the map at any kilometer, information will appear with the estimated time of your arrival at that point, as well as its coordinates.

On the map you can see the data for each kilometer distance

disadvantages

The main disadvantage of this handy calculator is that it is primarily focused on the United States. On the map above, you can visually compare the number of American and other races in the site database. Of the European competitions, only the main major starts are present. We are not even talking about Ukrainians.

Marco Marathon Calculator

Opportunities

A calculator for those who want to run a marathon using the negative splits strategy – accelerating in the second half of the distance.A full layout is issued with an indication of the target pace and heart rate for each kilometer. All this is accompanied by comments with valuable advice.

How to use

The calculator calculates the marathon time based on the results of a half marathon or a 10 km race (in competitive mode). You need to run it towards the end of the marathon training cycle, on average for 6 weeks. This is the so-called estimate start, which is included in many plans, and which allows you to fairly accurately assess the typed shape and predict the results in the marathon.

To calculate, we introduce the result of the capex race and indicate the maximum pulse

To calculate, enter the result of the estimated run and indicate the maximum heart rate

We get the target time for the marathon (taking into account the fact that you will continue to train in the same spirit and make a reasonable lead to the start), as well as the layout for the distance with negative splits.

disadvantages

  • the negative splits strategy is good for experienced marathon runners, not so good for beginners, because. requires great psychological stability in the last kilometers. Even if we conserve strength in the first half of the marathon, closer to 35 we most often lose our morale and lose the motivation to endure. Plus, the lack of experience with nutrition and other bugs usually come out at this stage of the marathon.
  • the layout does not take into account the relief, i.e. it is only good for flat tracks. The presence of hills will require serious amendments.

Runners Connect Temperature Calculator

Opportunities

The calculator allows you to visually assess how hot weather affects running, and how the results change during competitions or trainings depending on the air temperature. By the way, the well-known trainer Jack Daniels (yes, yes, his name is the same, but the name of another Jack is on the bottles), the author of the book From 800 meters to the marathon, participated in its creation.

How to use

We enter the distance and the target time, we get the time with corrections for different temperatures. The indicated temperatures are not in absolute numbers, but those that “feel like” (feels like), i.e. taking into account humidity and wind.

The authors warn that the calculator is based on averaged data, and each person reacts to heat individually – someone tolerates it better, someone worse. But the general idea is clear: the hotter, the more you need to slow down. Temperatures up to 15 degrees (60 Fahrenheit) are considered optimal conditions for running.

Example of using the calculator: how the marathon time changes when the air temperature is raised

There is a calculator for converting Fahrenheit into human numbers understandable to us, for example, here.

disadvantages

The need to make extra gestures to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius.
