Pyongyang Marathon, also known as International Marathon on the Prize of Mangönde– This is an annual marathon conducted in North Korea. The International Association of Athletics Federations assigned a marathon in Pyongyang Bronze status in its 3-level system, and it fixes the results of the race.

Who can take part in the marathon

There are no restrictions on participation in the marathon: lovers and professionals of any age and gender can escape the marathon. To register as a professional member, men must have the result no worse than 2h 27m. In the last 3 years. For women, the result should be no worse than 2h 38m.

If you do not finish the race at the timetime, the bus will pick you up and deliver you to the stadium, since Pyongyang's streets will be reopened to move vehicles from 13.30.

History of Marathon

For the first time, the marathon was held in 1981 and then only men participated in it. Women were admitted to the race in 1984. Foreign Marathon Fans first ran through the streets of the capital of one of the most mysterious state in 2014, it was already the 27th annual marathon on the prize of Mangönde. Foreign professional runners twice won the Pyongyang Marathon. In 2014, Pyongyang took 225 amateur marathontes from 27 countries – participants in Marathon arrived from Sweden, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Spain, China, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, etc. In 2016, almost 1000 runners participated in the race. More than 42,000 people welcomed Marathonians at the Kim Il Sen Senna Stadium, thousands went to Pyongyang's streets to support athletes with applause and handshakes. The 2015 marathon was originally closed for foreign participants due to the concerns of the spread of Ebola, but already in March 2015, the borders of North Korea were reopened for foreigners and the decision was revised.

Pyongyang Marathon 2018 accepted more than 450 foreign participants, and in 2019 their quantity doubled. Marathons 2020, 2021 and 2022 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
