Manchester United

At the age of 17, John O'Shea signed a professional contract with Manchester United. His debut for the first team of the club took place on 13 October 1999 in the Football League Cup match against Aston Villa, in which Manchester United lost 3-0.

In 2000, John went on loan to Bournemouth, and the following year to Belgian Antwerp. He then returned to Manchester United and began playing in the first team from the 2002/2003 season, demonstrating a versatile game in all defensive positions, as well as in the central midfield position. In 2003, O'Shea won the first championship title with red devils».

At the beginning of the 2003/04 season, O'Shea scored his first goal for Manchester United: the Irishman's ball secured his team a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton. In the course of the season, Rio Ferdinand did not play for 5 months due to a suspension received after missing a doping test. John O'Shea replaced Ferdinand in central defence, and helped Manchester reach the FA Cup final in which they beat Millwall 3-0. John himself spent all 90 minutes on the field.

O'Shea showed consistent form throughout the 2004/2005 season. At that time, there were rumors about the possible departure of the Irishman from Manchester United to Liverpool or Newcastle, but this did not happen. One of the brightest moments in, in general, unfortunate for red devilsThe season was a victory on the road over the London Arsenal with a score of 4:2. In this match, O'Shea scored the fourth goal for his team, throwing Manuel Almunia from 17 meters.

Injury to Gary Neville in the 2005/2006 season gave John a chance to gain a foothold in the first team. But the season has been uneven for him. In October 2005, Manchester United captain Roy Keane criticized O'Shea along with a group of other players (Alan Smith, Darren Fletcher, Kieran Richardson) in an interview with the club's MUTV channel. The reason was the away defeat of the Mancunians from Middlesbrough (4:1).

I'm not surprised by the defeat – on the contrary, I expected something like that … When they [the young players] signed their contracts, they thought they had already achieved success. But they themselves are indebted to the coach, the team staff and the fans. Signing a new contract, these guys thought it was the best day of their careers. They thought they had it all. But in reality, they have not achieved anything … If you are well paid, you have to make serious efforts to deserve it.

On February 4, 2007, during the English Premier League match against Tottenham, O'Shea replaced Edwin van der Sar in goal, who broke his nose during the selection of the ball (by that time all three substitutes had been used). John managed to outplay Robbie Keane when he went one on one with him, and made several more successful game actions. After this incident, Manchester United fans sang Ireland's number one in honor of O'Shea.

A month later, John brought United a victory over Liverpool at Anfield (0: 1), scoring in the last minute of the match. In total, O'Shea scored five times in the 2006/2007 season. His goals helped red devils successfully play in the Premier League, regaining the title of champion of England, lost three years ago.

During the 2007/2008 season, O'Shea's versatile abilities as a versatile footballer allowed him to appear quite often both as a substitute and as a starter due to numerous injuries to defending and midfield players. On September 26, 2007, in the Football League Cup match Manchester United – Coventry City, O'Shea first entered the field with the captain's armband. On November 23, John extended his contract with the club until 2012. The 2007/2008 season was the best for Manchester in nine years: according to its results, “Red Devildefended the English title and won the Champions League.

Due to injuries to Gary Neville and Wes Brown, O'Shea spent the 2008/2009 season as the club's main right back. On 20 January 2009, he scored against Derby County in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final, Manchester United won 4–2 and qualified for the final despite a 0–1 defeat in the first leg. O'Shea took part in the final match at Wembley, where the opponent red devilsturned out to be London Tottenham. The teams failed to score against each other in regular and extra time, and in the penalty shoot-out, United turned out to be stronger and won the first trophy of the season. The second was the Premier League championship cup, which the Mancunians won three times in a row.

On 29 April, John scored the only goal in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal. Manchester United reached the final of the tournament, defeating the London club with a score of 4:1 on aggregate, but lost there to Barcelona (0:2). Unlike last year's final, O'Shea appeared on the field from the first minutes and played a full match.

The next two seasons, O'Shea did not play as often in the red devils. He captained Manchester United twice more, in the first round of the 2009/10 Premier League season (1-0 win over Birmingham) and in the Champions League semi-final on 4 May 2011.

Sunderland

On July 7, 2011, Manchester United midfielder John O'Shea officially became a Sunderland player. The 30-year-old Irishman has signed a four-year contract. On August 27, O'Shea played the first match for Sunderland, and on December 29, 2012, John scored for the first time as part of a new club, which, however, did not save black cats”from defeat in the match with Tottenham Hotspur.

In October 2014, already captain of Sunderland, O'Shea signed a new two-year contract with the club. In the 2014/15 season, he played 37 matches in the Premier League, missing only one game due to injury (in the 36th round against Everton). After the departureblack cats” to the championship at the end of the 2016/17 season, John extended the contract for another year.

The debut of the Irishman in the national team took place on August 15, 2001, when he came on as a substitute in the 84th minute of the match against Croatia. O'Shea has competed in qualifiers for every major competition since 2002 World Cup qualifiers, as well as the 2012 and 2016 European Championships. In the Euro 2012 qualifying, he played in 9 matches, including the return play-off against Estonia, and helped the Irish reach the European Championship for the first time since 1988.

On October 14, 2014, John played his 100th match for Ireland, in which he managed to hit the gates of the Germans and bring his team a draw in the 2016 Euro 2016 qualifying match (1: 1).
